Longitudinal Analysis of Birth Settings and Prenatal Care Utilization in New Jersey

This research project examines the shifting landscape of birth settings in New Jersey from 2016 to 2023, focusing on the utilization of hospitals, freestanding birth centers, and home births. Using New Jersey birth certificate data, the study will analyze how maternal factors — specifically race, geographic location of residence, and parity (number of previous births) — influence the choice of delivery site and the adequacy of prenatal care. Furthermore, the project will investigate how the geographical and temporal availability of birth centers in the state impacts these choices and the frequency of maternal transfers between facilities. By identifying disparities and trends in access and utilization, this study aims to provide evidence-based insights to inform New Jersey’s maternal health policies and ensure equitable care access and delivery for all residents
